Water is a very interesting organization. I just heard about you a few days ago. Now I have two projects I'd like to commence with (water filters for our local school cafeteria, and one for the cafeteria in a nearby orphanage) and will apply for an Appropriate Projects Grant as soon as I have enough information. Meanwhile, I created an account so I can donate to the Haiti fund. When I am done with Peace Corps next year I would like to work for a non-profit doing work such as Water Charity or a similar organization.

On a daily basis i see how water is needed and the lack of access people have.
Kanel, Matam Region, Senegal
I'm an Environmental Education volunteer for the Peace Corps in Northern Senegal, about 10k from the border with Mauritania. Being a departmental capital, my community is a mix of education professionals who either chose to stay or who were affectated to the area and traditional families, mostly of the Pulaar ethnic group. Some of my current projects include a concert with local artists promoting HIV/AIDS education and testing, trash management initiatives at the area schools and a latrine project at two elementary schools. I love it here!
My "interest" in water started when I came here to Senegal and saw how a lack of water or related facilities negatively affected peoples lives. Clean water is really the foundation for good health and it is just not available to everyone here. Orginally and perhaps naively, a latrine project was just not on my agenda, since I saw that nearly 100% of family compounds have latrines. However, through a continued dialogue with my community, I soon learned that at the two largest elementary schools in my area there are a total of over 1600 students with just five latrines and two faucets (one of which is broken) shared between them! Parents in Kanel send their children off to school every day in the hopes of improving their future through education, but in doing so, these children spend most of their time in an environment that exposes them to unsanitary conditions and puts them at a greater risk for contracting a potentially life threatening disease. According to the WHO, diarrhoeal disease is the number four leading cause of death of people of all ages in Senegal. Additionally, inadequate facilities are a breeding ground for other contageous diseases, not to mention for the mosquito carriers of malaria. Recently, I paid a visit to the schools with a water sanitation engineer from a local health agency and we were both shocked to learn that children regularly defecate behind the old crumbling walls of the non-functional latrines, only steps away from classroom doors and communal areas. Something positive also came from this jarring visit: I received an estimate for 12 block latrines and two new faucets for the two schools. At present, I am researching funding options to cover the total cost of 3,460,400.00 (about 7075 USD) so that my community can take the step towards better health and a better quality of life for it's future generations.
I graduated from the University of Nottingham with a Bsc in Geography last year. I have a keen interest in the physical environment and I am looking to pursue a career in water management. Ultimately I would love to work within the developing world, with a charity, or set up my own volunteer programme, to help improve water accessibility and quality.
